Photon Torpedoes
Photon torpedoes are the principal faster then light weapon system used my most major cultures in the alpha quadrant. Torpedoes have been preferred in FLT combat due to Phasers EM energy is diminished when it hits the light barrier, although recent developments have allowed Phasers to be used at warp velocities.

Photon torpedoes were first developed by the Federation in 2215, to replace earlier nuclear weapons. These torpedoes were extremely limited and used only for defence of a Starship, due to their relatively low yield and short range. These torpedoes worked on a simple 1:1 matter, anti-matter reaction, where deuterium slugs were injected into a magnetically contained antideuterium. The early torpedoes had a tactical range of 750,000 kilometres. The current torpedo was first developed in 2271 and had a much higher yield and increased operational range. These torpedoes can be configured with variable amounts of matter and antimatter, the typical torpedo carries 1.5 kilograms of antimatter. Shortly after launch the matter and anti-matter are released into the central mixing chamber, and broken into small packets and held apart by strong magnetic fields. This increases the annihilation area by a factor of three, greatly increasing the yield of the torpedo.

Current torpedoes have a yield of 18.5 isotones, with a theoretical maximum of 25 isotones in a matter antimatter reaction, and an operational range of 4,050,000 kilometres. The casing of the torpedo is made from duranium and terminium, and measures 2.1x0.76x0.45 meters with a dry weight of 186.7 kilograms. A Galaxy class Starship has standard compliment of 275 casings with the matter and antimatter loaded just before launch. On Galaxy class ships ten torpedoes can be loaded and fired simultaneously in one spread. Each torpedo is fitted with a warp sustainers engine. This is not a true warp engine with only 1/12 the reaction chamber size need for warp flight. If a torpedo is fired from sub light speeds the torpedo can not reach warp. If fired from a vessel moving at warp, the torpedo gets its velocity from the torpedo launcher tube
Photon torpedoes have become a secondary weapon in recent years on larger starships which are now fitted with the much higher yield quantum torpedo
