Starship Landing
There are times when a Starship may be called upon to land on a planet, either by emergency or intentionally. For this purpose Starfleet has designed several procedures for putting a ship on the surface.

The first method is an emergency landing. This is designed for Galaxy class and other ships that can separate their saucer section. Then the saucer section enters a planets atmosphere a series of air braking manoeuvres are preformed to slow the accent. Right before touchdown the structural integrity fields are set to high and the saucer section makes a smooth touchdown and slide out. This manoeuvre is extremely dangerous and us only used as a last resort.

The second method is design entire ships to land and take off again. This feature is incorporated in to the Intrepid and Defiant classes. Right before landing the ship extends landing struts and sets down on the surface. This landing method is also not recommended and transporters and shuttles should be used before this option.
