Warp Core Ejection |
The warp core is the most dangerous object carried on a starship,
capable of destroying the ship in under a second. Starfleet has
designed several safety procedures into all ships to keep the
warp core from destroying the ship.
When the warp core takes damage from an outside source, usually
during a battle, a series of safety precautions are implemented.
First the fuel supplies are cut off from the core. Second a
series of force fields are created to contain the core. If these
measures fail and the warp core still threatens the ship, the
core can be ejected manually or by automatic computer control.
The core is dropped out the bottom of the ship by explosive
charges, the anti-matter storage tanks can also be jettisoned
when the core is ejected. The core will only be ejected
automatically if the computer determines there is no other
option to keep the core stable, this is a last resort option
since it leaves the ship incapable of warp flight unable to get
home and highly vulnerable to enemy attack. In combat situations
the core can be detonated once it is clear of the ship, or the
core can be left to cool down and repaired later if the
situation permits.
Although very undesirable ejecting the warp core will save the
ship |
